A crankcase ventilation element is not an air filter and it is not an oil filter. It coalesces: blowby gas from the crankcase is pushed through the media, the oil mist carried in that gas collects into droplets on the fibres, and the drained oil goes back to the sump while the cleaned gas leaves. When one of these plugs the symptom is rarely subtle. Crankcase pressure climbs, the dipstick tube starts weeping, front and rear main seals get pushed out, and a shop chases oil leaks that were never leaks in the first place. Replacing the element on schedule is far cheaper than the seal job.
