This is a full flow spin on for the small bore Cummins B family. All of the oil the pump moves passes through this can before it reaches the bearings, so the media has to trap wear metal without choking flow on a cold start. That is what the built in bypass valve is for, and it is why a genuine can with the correct valve setting matters more on a diesel than the price difference suggests.
